With the New York Yankees selection of Andrew Brackman, the first round ended and the television lights went off. However, teams still went about finding their own diamonds in the rough in the supplemental and 49 other rounds of the draft. Here are the best 10 selections after the first round. 10. Brett Cecil LHP Maryland 38th pick Toronto Blue Jays: Cecil is a proven college left-hander who was a notch below Arkansas? Nick Schmidt and Rice Joe Savery. He slips to the supplemental round, where the Toronto Blue Jays were able to snatch him and get a fast riser for their pitching development. 9. Jake Arrieta RHP Texas Christian 159th pick Baltimore Orioles Arrieta is another college pitcher who appears to be further along in his development as opposed to other pitchers on the board. He tailed off at the end of the year, but he is an excellent, first round type talent that the Baltimore Orioles were able to get in the fifth round. 8. Drew Cumberland SS Pace HS (Florida) 46th pick San Diego Padres Drew Cumberland has been one of my favorite positional players in this draft for a long time and I think the San Diego Padres will be very happy with picking him up in the supplemental round. He is one of the most complete middle infielders at the high school level and while he needs time to develop, he is a definite talent heading to the West Coast. 7. Ryan Dent SS/2B Wilson HS (California) 62nd pick Boston Red Sox Dent was projected to go higher in the draft, but fell to the Red Sox at the end of the supplemental round. Dent is neck and neck with Cumberland for top middle infielder in the high school game and Dent definitely gives Boston a youthful option at shortstop in the next few years. 6. Michael Burgess OF Hillborough HS (Florida) 49th pick Washington Nationals Burgess has first round talent, but like many players in the draft, he fell because of fast risers and ended up being a nice pick for the Washington Nationals. He is a good looking outfielder with great power numbers in high school if he can stay out of trouble. 5. Julio Borbon OF Tennessee 35th pick Texas Rangers Word was coming out late that he might fall because of some questions about his college production, but he would have fit Texas in the first round and he really fits well in the supplemental round. He is a strong outfielder who has shown his talents in the college game and solidifies the draft as a success for the Texas Rangers. 4. Kyle Russell OF Texas 142nd pick St. Louis Cardinals Russell, above any other college player, improved his stock during this season by setting the single season home run record at Texas. A definite first-rounder, who would have been worth the Cardinals taking in the first round, lasted to pick 142 and made general manager Walk Jocketty look smart again. 3. Matt Harvey RHP Fitch HS (Connecticut) 118th pick Los Angeles Angels The only reason Harvey dropped was because of money demands, much like Rick Porcello. He is a North Carolina commit with monster talent and the Angels should be commended for taking a chance on talent, even if it is unlikely he will sign with them before August 15. 2. Josh Smoker LHP Calhoun HS (Georgia) 31st pick Washington Nationals Smoker was one of those hot risers come draft time and could of gone as high as No. 14 to the Atlanta Braves. He is a lefty with a big upside and another great catch for the Nationals with the first pick in the supplemental round to pair with Missouri State ace Ross Detwiler. 1. Jack McGeary LHP Roxbury Latin HS (Massachusetts) 190th pick Washington Nationals When I finally saw McGeary?s name in the sixth round, it secured for me that the Washington Nationals had the best draft in 2007. McGeary is a control pitcher from the Northeast, but his make-up and know-how of pitching from all reports is stunning. Don?t be surprised if he makes teams pay for passing on him, like the home town Boston Red Sox. Douglas Benton can be reached at [email protected]
