Toronto's shortstop John McDonald confirmed rumors that he had agreed in principle to a two-year contract for the 2008-09 seasons. The biggest revelation this season has been the evolution of the likable McDonald from light-hitting utility man into an everyday shortstop. Never having been considered anything other than a bench player in five-plus major-league seasons, this is the first time he has not played on a one-year deal. "Not a whole lot's going to change with my outlook," he said. "I'm very secure in the type of player that I am. I know that on this team with as much power as we have and our pitching staff, there's a need for a defensive guy in the middle."
