The news Monday about Jeremy Bonderman, as manager Jim Leyland put it, "wasn't good, but it was great."
Bonderman is out because of inflammation in his right elbow, but no surgery will be required. Rest and normal rehab has been prescribed until he's pain-free.
"Primarily rest," general manager Dave Dombrowski said.
The diagnosis came as a huge relief from the clubhouse up to the front office. As an optimistic Dombrowski said, if not in September, "maybe he'll pitch in October."
Tests on Bonderman's elbow, after the right-hander admitted Sunday he had sharp pain in his start against the Mariners, disclosed no structural damage -- only inflammation.
