The Arizona Diamondbacks are interested in free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman, potentially mirroring last year's unexpected signing of Corbin Burnes, as first reported by USA Today's Bob Nightengale.
A person briefed on Arizona's plans said "nothing is off the table" regarding the team's offseason pursuits. The Diamondbacks would likely need to trade second baseman Ketel Marte before signing Bregman to create payroll flexibility.
Bregman, who turns 32 in March, lives in the Phoenix area and is represented by Scott Boras. He enjoyed playing last season for the Boston Red Sox, who remain interested in re-signing him. Bregman had an .821 OPS and 18 homers in 114 games last season with the Red Sox.
The similarities to last year's Burnes signing are notable. Burnes also lives in Phoenix, is represented by Boras, and has young children. Arizona is the only team that holds spring training in its home metropolitan area, allowing players to live at home year-round. Bregman grew up in neighboring New Mexico before playing collegiately for LSU.
Burnes accepted deferrals in his six-year, $210 million deal, lowering the net present value below $194 million. He negotiated an opt-out after 2026, though Tommy John surgery in June makes that less likely.
The Diamondbacks might be reluctant to commit long-term to a 32-year-old hitter. However, the Burnes contract demonstrated their willingness to use creative structures. Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million deal with Boston last offseason featuring two opt-outs.
Arizona almost certainly needs to trade Marte before pursuing Bregman to maintain leverage. Deferrals in Marte's contract lower his luxury-tax average annual value to $14.6 million.
Bregman would command at least twice that AAV. Arizona's current payroll sits approximately $17 million below last season's figure. Bregman would play third base, with Jordan Lawlar, Blaze Alexander and Tim Tawa becoming second base options.
