The Boston Red Sox acquired veteran right-hander Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday, adding a three-time All-Star to pair with ace Garrett Crochet. The Cardinals received left-handed prospect Brandon Clarke and right-hander Richard Fitts, while Boston also received $20 million to offset Gray's salary, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Gray, 36, waived his no-trade clause to join Boston. The veteran went 14-8 with a 4.28 ERA last season while making all his scheduled starts for St. Louis.

Gray's contract was restructured to guarantee him $41 million over two years. He will earn $31 million in 2026 with a $30 million mutual option for 2027 that includes a $10 million buyout.

Gray and Crochet represent two of only five pitchers to record at least 200 strikeouts in each of the last two seasons. Gray struck out 201 batters in 2025 after fanning 203 in 2024.

The veteran right-hander finished fourth among qualified pitchers with a 5.3 strikeout-to-walk ratio last season. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow had identified adding a starting pitcher behind Crochet as an offseason priority.

Clarke, a 6-foot-4 left-hander, features a fastball that touches 100 mph paired with a sharp slider. The 22-year-old struck out 60 batters in 38 Class A innings this season but walked 27 for a 4.03 ERA.

Fitts posted a 5.00 ERA in 10 starts during his rookie season with Boston. The 25-year-old struck out 40 batters while surrendering 11 home runs across 45 innings.

"[Fitts] has already begun his big league career, and with his power stuff and willingness to attack the strike zone, he has the ability to start games at the highest level for many years," Cardinals president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom said. "Both have the potential to be part of our growing core for a long time."

Gray owns a career 125-102 record with a 3.58 ERA across 13 major league seasons. He made his most recent All-Star appearance in 2023.
