J.D. Martinez can opt out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox this offseason and hit the free agent market.

Martinez still has $62.5 million on his contract should he opt-in. He would receive a $2.5 million buyout if he hits the open market.

The slugger says he isn't close to making a decision on his opt-out. The last two years of his contract become mutual options if he spends a certain amount of time on the injured list due to another Lisfranc injury or other right foot complications.

"I understand it," Martinez said. "It's a business. I'll never hold it against anybody or anything like that. I've been through it too many times. If I did opt out, it wouldn't be a personal thing. It would be a business thing. Same thing on their end so there's an understanding on that."
