The Red Sox have made re-signing David Ortiz a priority and the two sides will begin having serious conversations at "some point next week," according to a team source.
Ortiz missed 71 of Boston's final 72 games with a right Achilles strain, but the injury shouldn't hamper his offseason workout regimen.
"David is someone who we feel strongly about bringing back, and we're trying to figure out a way to do that and we hope that happens," Ben Cherington said.
Ortiz hit .318 with 23 home runs and 60 RBIs in 90 games. His 1.026 slugging percentage would have led all of baseball had he finished with enough at-bats to qualify in the rankings.
