The Yankees have second baseman Robinson Cano and center fielder Curtis Granderson under contract through the 2013 season. Joel Sherman of The New York Post brought up whether or not the Yankees should consider extending their contracts in order to agree to a long-term deal that could be more economical. With that said, the organization is generally against extending player's contracts before they expire. After the 2007 season, however, the Yankees did a four-year deal with Cano with two option years that cover 2012 and 2013. If they hadn't, Cano would be a free agent this offseason coming off of a Home Run Derby title and two seasons that have elevated him to the best second baseman in the sport.
