The Opsera is a statistic RealGM's Chris Reina created in order to objectively rank teams by how well they hit (OPS) and pitch (ERA). In order to determine a team's Opsera, we take their OPS, multiply that number by 10 to move the decimal point over one place to the right and then subtract the team's ERA from that number. Below are the final rankings through Thursday, May 19th's games: Last week's ranking is in parenthesizes 1. (1) St. Louis Cardinals - 4.36 The Cardinals rank first in runs, batting average and on-base percentage. Those numbers could fall if Matt Holliday and Lance Berkman missed an extended period of time. 2. (2) New York Yankees - 4.18 They lost six-straight prior to their current three-game run, but their struggling percentage (1st, .446) and runs (3rd, 218) have kept them afloat. 3. (5) Cleveland Indians - 4.13 Cleveland ranks in the top ten in the four main hitting and pitching categories. Many still expect them to fall, but more than a quarter of the way through the season they are still running away with the AL Central. 4. (6) Atlanta Braves - 4.07 The Braves are staying alive in the NL East thanks to their exceptional pitching staff. Their 2.91 ERA is second behind only the Athletics, while they are tops in terms of WHIP (1.10) and batting average-against (.221). 5. (9) Oakland Athletics - 3.73 Oakland is the AL's version of Atlanta -- almost entirely pitching. 6. (8) Florida Marlins - 3.72 Gaby Sanchez (.317/.400/.509) continues to keep the Marlins afloat while Hanley Ramirez tries to work out of his slump. 7. (3) Philadelphia Phillies - 3.67 They are who we thought they were. The Phillies are hitting .247/.313/.367 as a team, while their pitching has been stellar. T8. (7) Tampa Bay Rays - 3.66 The Rays can be better offensively, which they'll likely need as their pitches hit the heart of the AL East schedule. -- (10) Texas Rangers - 3.66 A lot has worked out for the Rangers this season (Michael Young, Adrian Beltre and Alexi Ogando), but their injuries offset the good fortune. 10. (4) Los Angeles Angels - 3.58 Jered Weaver has lost four straight decisions after starting the season 6-0 and the Angels have dropped nine of their last 12 contests. Dan Haren, who has been brilliant, is 0-2 in his last six starts despite allowing more than two earned runs just once. 11. (15) Toronto Blue Jays - 3.57 12. (13) Cincinnati Reds - 3.47 13. (11) San Francisco Giants - 3.45 14. (18) Milwaukee Brewers - 3.39 15. (16) Colorado Rockies - 3.28 16. (17) New York Mets - 3.25 17. (22) Arizona Diamondbacks - 3.24 18.
