Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton is asking for $12 million in arbitration, but the club has offered just $8.7 million.
Texas is trying to avoid an arbitration hearing for the 11th straight offseason.
"It's a prominent spread in arbitration that you often see with a player of this magnitude," assistant general manager Thad Levine said.
"Based upon the tone and level of conversation before we exchanged, I don't see why we won't have an open conversation with [agent] Mike Moye and Josh Hamilton."
