The Yankees had serious discussions with pitcher Carl Pavano this summer.
New York even made Pavano a one-year contract offer, which may have turned into one of the most surprising signings in recent memory.
Pavano's previous stint with the Yankees went down as one of the worst in team history. After inking a four-year, nearly $40 million deal in 2005, the pitcher spent most of his time on the disabled list.
"I always thought that Pav can pitch here," general manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday.
"He has shown he can pitch in difficult circumstances. Did I have conversations with [Pavano's agent] Tom O'Connell about Pav? I did. Ultimately, I don't think he was afraid of coming back here."
Pavano's re-signing with the Twins is expected to become official on Wednesday.
