The Rays and outfielder B.J. Upton were just $300,000 apart in contract negotiations and now the two sides are headed for a tenuous arbitration meeting.
Tampa Bay offered $3 million and agent Larry Reynolds requested $3.3 million.
"As we have said, there are no winners in the arbitration process," executive VP Andrew Friedman said. "We are looking forward to getting past this and focusing on getting back to playing in October."
