The Miami Marlins tried to acquire Aroldis Chapman from the Cincinnati Reds before the New York Yankees completed a deal, according to a report.

Miami was unwilling to beat the offer New York made to Cincinnati.

The Arizona Diamondbacks may be done making big moves this offseason, but Dave Stewart is open to making the right additions.

The club explored the possibility of acquiring Brandon Phillips from the Cincinnati Reds. Talks included Aaron Hill, but the Diamondbacks reportedly didn't feel comfortable taking on as much of Phillips' 2017 salary as the Reds desired.

Stewart added that the price of bullpen help on the trade market is higher than he feels comfortable paying, particularly given that the club gave up two top prospects in the Shelby Miller trade.

The New York Yankees plan to keep Andrew Miller despite Monday's trade for Aroldis Chapman, according to Brian Cashman.

Cashman said he called Miller prior to the deal to give the reliever a warning and tell him that New York intends to keep Miller, Chapman and Dellin Betances.

"I was making him aware that it will feed a lot of speculation that's been around," Cashman said. "I told him our intent is to retain all three players. How it shakes out in the closer role, going forward, that's all for another day."

The New York Yankees have acquired Aroldis Chapman from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for four minor league players.

The Reds get right-handers Caleb Cotham and Rookie Davis and infielders Eric Jagielo and Tony Renda from the Yankees.

"We felt this was an opportunity for us to add a big arm to our bullpen," said Brian Cashman, who already has Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller at the back end of his bullpen.

A baseball source told ESPN's Wallace Matthews that the Yankees made the trade knowing both Florida law enforcement officials and Major League Baseball are continuing to investigate the Oct. 30 incident in which Chapman allegedly choked his girlfriend and then fired eight shots from a handgun in the garage of his Davie, Fla., home.

The St. Louis Cardinals have shown interest in trading for one of the Colorado Rockies' outfielders.

Carlos Gonzalez, who turned 30 in October, hits better at Coors Field and may not be a realistic target for the Cardinals.

Corey Dickerson and Charlie Blackmon are other possible targets.

The Detroit Tigers have received trade calls about Nick Castellanos this offseason.

If the Tigers want to clear some money off the books, dealing Castellanos won't help. He still barely makes the league minimum, which wouldn't create enough space to sign an outfielder.

The San Diego Padres have placed a priority on finding a shortstop.

A.J. Preller notes that the offseason is still young as he looks to fill roster holes.

The New York Yankees are making Ivan Nova available in a trade, according to a report.

"They are offering him out there, but I don't know if there's any takers," an executive said of Nova.

Nova, 29, is a year away from free agency and coming off a season that included a return from Tommy John surgery.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are staying in touch with the Miami Marlins regarding a trade for Jose Fernandez, according to a report.

It's still hard to see the Marlins dealing Fernandez at this point in time.

The St. Louis Cardinals have contacted the Tampa Bay Rays about a starting pitcher and Jake Odorizzi is believed to be the target, according to a report.

Odorizzi is from the St. Louis area.

Odorizzi, 25, was 9-9 with a 3.35 ERA in 28 starts for the Rays last season and he has also been linked to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is under club control until 2020.
