AL Beats NL In 10 Innings, Robinson Cano Named MVP

Jul 12, 2017 7:36 AM

Robinson Cano hit a home run in the top of the 10th inning to give the American League a 2-1 victory over the National League in Tuesday night's All-Star Game.

Cano was named the Most Valuable Player in Miami. Before the game, eight living Latin American-born Hall of Famers threw out the first pitch.

"It means a lot," Cano said. "Those guys really started this game for the Latin American players, guys that really made this game so fun and exciting, made fans come and watch, and opened the doors for us. ... It's something, to catch that first pitch and say hello to them and being in that picture, I just can't wait to get to social media and get that picture and put it on a frame in my home."

Aaron Judge Wins 2017 Home Run Derby

Jul 11, 2017 10:25 AM

Aaron Judge answered the call on Monday night, winning the 2017 Home Run Derby on Monday night in Miami.

The New York Yankees rookie defeated Miguel Sano of the Minnesota Twins in the final round.

"I had no pressure going into it. I'm a rookie," Judge said. "This is my first time doing it. For me, I've got no expectations. I'm just going to go in there and have some fun and see what we can do tonight. It was a blast. I enjoyed every minute of it -- watching the other guys swing, coming here early and talking to the media. Everything about today was fantastic."

Judge overcame 22 home runs from hometown slugger Justin Bour in the first round and then defeated Cody Bellinger in the semifinals.

Bryce Harper Wants To See Top Vote-Getters Pick All-Star Teams

Jul 12, 2017 8:00 AM

Bryce Harper has an idea to make the Major League Baseball All-Star Game more exciting.

Harper wouldn't mind seeing the top two vote-getters select the teams regardless of league affiliations.

"It'd be great if let's say the two leading vote-getters by the fans did a draft system and could pick from both sides," he said. "So I could be facing Max Scherzer today -- I mean, nobody sees that. It would be a lot of fun to do something like that to make it a little more competition to face somebody on your team, like if [Clayton] Kershaw was facing Justin Turner, or Chris Sale facing Mookie Betts. That'd be a lot of fun."

This year, Harper and New York Yankees rookie Aaron Judge were the leading vote-getters.

Harper said he was happy that players were able to have fun at the All-Star Game with home-field advantage no longer attached to the game.

"I think it's great. Guys just being able to come in and relax and enjoy what we do. We play 162 games a year, so you're able to just come in here and hang out and enjoy being around your family and friends," he said. "I think with baseball your competition is going to be up there, of course. I don't think guys are going to take at-bats off or pitches off or anything like that. I think best record in baseball should have home-field advantage no matter what."

Chris Sale, Max Scherzer To Start All-Star Game

Jul 10, 2017 3:59 PM

Chris Sale and Max Scherzer will start for the American and National League, respectively, in Tuesday's Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

Sale, then with the Chicago White Sox, also pitched the first inning of last year's game. He will be the 16th player to make consecutive All-Star starts, the first since Randy Johnson did so in 2000-01.

Scherzer will make his second All-Star start as well. He started for the AL as a member of the Detroit Tigers in 2013.

Brent Honeywell Leads U.S. To Futures Game Victory

Jul 10, 2017 8:00 AM

The United States defeated the World team 7-6 in Sunday's All-Star Futures Game at Marlins Park.

Honeywell, who was the only pitcher to throw more than one inning, struck out four in two scoreless frames. He was the first of 10 pitchers for the United States, and the group combined for 11 strikeouts.

He threw a screwball to Alex Verdugo of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first inning.

"I had thrown him everything else," said Honeywell, a right-hander who is with Triple-A Durham. "I thought, `If I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it right here.' And it was a really good one."

Jul 7, 2017 9:05 AM

The final All-Star fan selections for next week's exhibition game were given to Mike Moustakas of the Kansas City Royals and Justin Turner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Online fan voting determined the "Final Vote" last spot on each league's roster.

The Cubs will be represented by Wade Davis, who spent last season with the Royals.

Logan Morrison: Gary Sanchez Doesn't Belong In Home Run Derby

Jul 6, 2017 8:15 AM

Logan Morrison didn't get an invitation to next week's Home Run Derby and he isn't happy.

Morrison has 24 home runs, tied for second in the Major Leagues, while participant Gary Sanchez has launched just 13 homers.

"Gary shouldn't be there,'' Morrison said. "Gary's a great player, but he shouldn't be in the Home Run Derby.

"I remember when I had 14 home runs. That was a month and a half ago."

Sanchez has the fewest home runs among those competing in this year's competition, but he missed more than a month of the season because of a strained biceps.

"I'm not disappointed," Morrison said. "It's par for the course. I play for the Rays. I get it. They can't even get my picture right. When they put my name up there, they put Corey [Dickerson's] picture up there ... on MLB Network. When they put up the home run leaders, they put Corey's swing on there -- not mine.''
