The division boasts two of the better teams in baseball in the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves and a host of young players sprinkled around the division. With first round stars like Washington?s Ryan Zimmerman, Atlanta?s Jeff Francoeur and Philadelphia?s Chase Utley, the National League East has shown the ability to take advantage of the first round. Can they do it again in 2007? Read on to find out.
Washington Nationals (Picks: 6th overall)
The Nationals are working on rebuilding their organization heading into their new ballpark under general manger Jim Bowden and manager Manny Acta. They have six drafted players on the roster and if they follow the plans of new president Stan Kastan, they will look to draft pitching and athletes to help flush out the major and minor league rosters. In the first round, look for them to land a stud pitching arm like high school pitcher Jarrod Parker.
Florida Marlins (Picks: 12th overall)
In Florida, they have had a lot of practice of rebuilding their organization through the draft and young players. They only have six players drafted players on their roster, but they also have traded for minor league players like shortstop Hanley Ramirez. The organization has a stockpile of pitching, so it would seem they will look to add another bat to bring into the organization. One of the best bats in the draft is Lewis-Clark State 3B/1B Beau Mills, who will be great value at No. 12 for Florida.
Atlanta Braves (Picks: 14th overall)
Atlanta is one of the few teams who still rely on their young talent to develop and flush out their major league roster. They have 10 drafted players on their roster, including five positional starters and two pitchers in the regular rotation. Under general manager John Schuerholz, they have relied on Georgia high school talent that they can craft into a Braves-type of player, so look for them to take outfielder Jason Heyward if he is still there at No. 14.
Philadelphia Phillies (Picks: 19th overall):
The Phillies have also been great at the draft with 11 drafted players on the roster. The team has battled against slow starts each spring and with a young infield and ace in Cole Hamels, the Phillies should look to go after their biggest need come Thursday, which is third base. Granted, he won?t be available for 2007 or even 2008, but California high school third base Matt Dominguez should be great value at pick 19.
New York Mets (Picks: 30th overall):
After a great season in 2006, the New York Mets have the last pick in the first round, where they will look to add to their great athletes in the minor leagues. They only have four drafted players, including third baseman David Wright. With general manager Omar Minaya, the Mets look to add athletes and find a place for them once they are in their system. However, I think they will look for young pitching to take over for Tom Glavine and Pedro Martinez down the road with Rice LHP Joe Savery.
