The National League West has been one of the most difficult divisions in baseball this season and that is largely due to the talent on their rosters that was found in the Draft. Players like Jake Peavy, Tim Lincecum, Russell Martin, Matt Cain, Carlos Quentin and Matt Holliday all play key roles on the teams that drafted them. Arizona Diamondbacks (9th) The Diamonbacks have done really well in recent years drafting position players. First round choices Stephen Drew (2004, 15th), Carlos Quentin (2003, 29th) and Conor Jackson (2003, 19th) form the nucleus of their lineup. Their pitchers have largely been misses other than the gem of finding Brandon Webb in the 8th round. With an older staff, a pitcher like Andrew Brackman is nearly a lock. Colorado Rockies (8th) Troy Tulowitzki (2005 first round pick) is already their everyday shortstop and their patience with Matt Holliday has clearly paid off. Free agent pitchers avoid Colorado, so the draft is where they can grab talent such as Jeff Francis. Los Angeles Dodgers (20th) The Dodgers have always had a well-stocked farm system and it comes from their double-pronged attack of Latin America and the draft. But only five former drafted players are currently on their roster (Billingsley, Broxton, Martin, LaRoche and Repko). Their lineup has been built largely via free agency in players such as Nomar, Kent, Furcal and Pierre and gambling this pick on a guy who projects to be a corner outfielder slugger would be the wise move for Ned Colletti. San Diego Padres (23rd) Small market teams must be savvy and the draft hasn?t been a fruitful place for the Padres. Jake Peavy was an incredibly fortunate 15th round pick, but Khalil Greene is the only other impact player drafted by the club. Much the same as Colorado, San Diego attracts free agent pitchers while it simultaneously repels sluggers. A do-everything outfielder with pop would be the wisest place to look at 23rd. San Francisco Giants (10th, 22nd, 29th) Because the Giants have three first round picks and because this is for all intents and purposes Barry Bonds final season, this is the most important Draft in their franchise history. The front office has been averse to first round picks in some years (famously signed Michael Tucker because they didn?t want their pick), but they have had some great success in recent seasons. Tim Lincecum is the early star from last year?s draft while Matt Cain and Noah Lowry are also former first round picks in their rotation. Another first rounder, Brad Hennessey, is now their closer. Position players have been an absolute nightmare for the Giants though. Matt Williams is the last homegrown All-Star and it isn?t like they have even come close to finding a David Wright or Prince Fielder.
