This is the newest addition to RealGM?s coverage of baseball in 2007 as we unveil our player scouting blog. In this space, we will write up small scouting reports on how players are doing and will update it with reports throughout the season. Yovani Gallardo, Friday, June 29 Milwaukee Brewers right-handed starter Yovani Gallardo is considered the top pitching prospect in the Brewers system, Gallardo is primarily a two-pitch pitcher with a high 80s to low 90s mph fastball and a big breaking curveball. His over the top delivery gives him some arm drag, which makes the ball appear faster out of his hand to the batter. Gallardo?s best asset at this point is his control up and down the zone, but without dominant velocity, he can get hurt if he travels too far up the zone. Matt Cain, Wednesday, June 27 San Francisco Giants right-hander Matt Cain has had some hard luck this season, but he is still one of the most promising young pitchers in the game. He has a very good fastball at 94-96 mph and spots it well up and down the zone. He also has a change-up that tops out at 90 mph and a decent breaking ball. Against the San Diego Padres, Cain has some problems closing out batters and went away his fastball just enough to lose the game. He is an excellent young pitcher to build around, but Cain needs to learn how to pitch a little more to take the next step. Edgar Renteria, Tuesday, June 26 Atlanta Braves shortstop Edgar Renteria has been the model of consistency for the Braves since he came last season. Renteria is a professional hitter who is one of the best in baseball at always getting good contact consistently and rarely swings and misses. He doesn?t have great power, but his approach at the plate allows him to stay back and drive the ball to either gap. His defense sometimes gets overlooked, but he is rangy and has a strong arm with accuracy. Renteria is one of the best all-around shortstops in the game.
