Josh Vitters Scouting Report
- Josh Vitters was the third overall selection in the 2007 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs. Unfair or not, Vitters is already being criticized by some Cubs followers for not being Matt Wieters, who was of course passed on in the draft in favor of the more affordable Wieters.
- Wieters was born on August 27th, 1989 and attended Cypress High School, where he was an All-American selection. He is 6'3", 195 pounds with good strength.
- Vitters spent most of the 2008 season in the low-A short season in Boise where he hit .328/.365/.498 in 259 at bats. He struck out 45 times while walking in 13 at bats. Defensively, he unquestionably struggled while committing 14 errors and posting a fielding percentage of .915. He has a strong arm, but is not very quick and is still fine-tuning his fundamentals.
- He has great power potential combined with fairly advanced plate discipline considering his age. He clearly projects as being capable of hitting 30+ homers with a .300+ average.
- Vitters put on a spectacular display of power during the Showcase, but his high school numbers were extremely ordinary, but those numbers were clearly influenced by his battle with pneumonia.
