The Cubs have their best overall team in decades, but with a few notable exceptions, this club was built via free agency and trades.
Even though Geovany Soto is just about all you can ever want offensively at the catcher position, both the Cubs and Josh Vitters appear destined to be haunted by the fact that they passed on Matt Wieters in the 2007 MLB Draft.
Vitters should have a nice career and he is really the only player in their system that seems destined to make a sizable impact.
The arms listed below all have nice potential, but are flawed in various ways.

Top Chicago Cubs Prospects
1. Josh Vitters - 3B
Vitters is clearly the best (some say only) bat in the Cubs' system. He has great power potential combined with fairly advanced plate discipline.
2. Jay Jackson - RHP
Drafted in the ninth round in 2008, Jay Jackson already looks like a steal with an awesome slider and a beyond excellent SWHIP.
3. Jeff Samardzija - RHP
Samardzija arrived at Wrigley Field with a lot of fanfare and money, but he must work on his secondary stuff and command to be more than a short reliever.
4. Andrew Cashner - RHP
Cashner features a mid-90's fastball, a slider and a change, all of which are purportedly very good pitches, but will he become a starter or short reliever?
5. Welington Castillo - C
Castillo almost certainly will be an excellent defensive catcher with enough potential in his bat to be adequate offensively.
