Jefry Marte - 3B
Jefry Marte Scouting Report
- Jefry Marte was signed for $550k in 2007 by the Mets.
- He was born on June 21st, 1991 in the Dominican Republic and is listed at 6'1", 187 lbs. Marte bats and throws right-handed.
- Marte looks like a prototypical slugger, who is already advanced despite a very high ceiling that still exists. His OBP will improve as he learns to hit to all fields. His bat speed is remarkable.
- Marte hit for a very impressive .325/.398/.532 (.930 OPS) and four homers in 154 at bats in the Gulf Coast League during the 2008 season as a 17-year-old. He lowered hit strikeout rate and increased his walks as the season progressed.
- Against righties, Marte had an OPS of .971 in 118 at bats, compared to .725 in a fraction of the sample size against lefties.
- Defensively, Marte was a disaster in 2008, making 19 errors in 40 games and logging a fielding percentage of .821. He should settle down eventually, but he clearly not preternaturally gifted with the glove and could end up as a corner outfielder (most likely right) due to his very good arm strength.
- Ranked 94th by Baseball Prospectus in their Top 100 Prospects for 2009.
