Return to MLB Prospect index David Cooper - 1B David Cooper Scouting Report - David Cooper was the 17th overall selection in the 2008 MLB Draft out of Cal-Berkeley after transferring from Cal State Fullerton. He was signed almost immediately by the Jays. - Cooper is 6'1", 210 lbs, throws and bats left-handed. He was born February 12th, 1987 in Stockton and attended Tokay High School. - He hit .359/.449/.682 with 19 homers in his final season at Cal. - Cooper made three separate stops in low Single-A, Single-A and high Single-A during the 2008 season, making 273 at bats and hitting .333/.399/.502. He only hit five homers, but he did have 29 doubles and 30 walks, 46 strikeouts. The homer number should come along, as he has excellent power to left as well as right. - He has good plate discipline and could easily develop into a consistent .385 OBP/.500 SLG type of hitter on the major league level. - Defensively, Cooper is not expected to advance beyond a very ordinary level. He doesn't have a very good arm and is not especially quick. A move to left field appears unlikely, so he will have to hit his way into the majors. - Ranked 88th by Baseball Prospectus in their Top 100 Prospects for 2009.
