The Los Angeles Dodgers continued their reshaping by acquiring closer Danys Baez and reliever Lance Carter from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Saturday in exchange for young pitchers Edwin Jackson and Chuck Tiffany. Baez, 28, was an all-star for Tampa Bay in 2005 pitching an ERA of 2.86 along with 51 strikeouts in 72.1 innings. The 28-year-old stopper also converted 41 of 49 save opportunities with the Rays last season. Lance Carter, 31, split time with Tampa Bay and Triple-A Durham last season. The former all-star posted a 1-2 record along with a 4.89 ERA with the Devil Rays in 2005. Edwin Jackson, formerly a highly touted prospect, spent last season with three professional clubs. The 22-year-old?s best stretch was with Double-A Jacksonville where he won six games while posting a 3.48 earned run average. Tiffany, 21, was 11-7 with a 3.93 ERA, 134 strikeouts and 43 walks in 110 innings with the Class-A Vero Beach Dodgers last season. Breaking Down The Deal Baez features a hard fastball and nasty slider. He is absolute murder on right-handed hitters and has a knack for shutting down opponents. Lance Carter is a crafty reliever that uses a sinking changeup as his out pitch. Tampa Bay continues to add starting pitching to the prospect barn. The club is known for their plethora of position prospects. The Devil Rays, however, have always lacked solid pitching prospects. Jackson and Tiffany provide depth to Tampa Bay?s developing pitching corps. Dodgers GM Ned Colletti continues to make good moves this offseason. With former Cy Young Award winner Eric Gagne returning from elbow surgery, Los Angeles needed to have a backup plan for the closer spot. Both Danys Baez and Lance Carter will be valuable assets to the Dodgers bullpen. Baez, if used as a setup man, will be a nice bridge to Gagne. Carter, formerly a closer, will provide a veteran presence to the pen. The Dodgers win this deal in acquiring a talented flamethrower in Baez and a veteran reliever in Carter. The only question is whether Baez will act upon his numerous remarks of not wanting to undertake the setup role. Winner: Los Angeles Dodgers Do you have a question, concern, or comment? ?
