The Chicago Cubs agreed to terms on Monday with free-agent pitcher Wade Miller on a one-year contract worth $1 million. Miller, 29, was 4-4 with a 4.95 ERA last year with the Boston Red Sox. The former Houston Astro underwent surgery on his right labrum in September, but expects to return in May. The 29-year-old right hander is 62-43 with a career ERA of 3.98 in seven years of big league service with Houston and Boston. Breaking Down The Deal While Wade Miller is unlikely to join the Cubs staff until mid-May, his signing with Chicago is definitely a good insurance move by GM Jim Hendry. With the possibility of Kerry Wood moving to the bullpen, Hendry needed to pull the trigger for a cheap pitching option. Wade Miller possesses a strong sinking fastball that can touch the mid-90s. He also throws a deceptive curveball and hard slider. Pitching at Wrigley Field will definitely benefit Miller, who is historically able to keep the ball inside the park. Upon a full recovery, Miller should be able to provide Chicago with some key victories down the stretch in 2006. My Grade: B Impact Grade: 1.5 of 5 Do you have a question, concern, or comment? ?
