The Texas Rangers filled a major void by signing free agent pitcher Kevin Millwood to a contract on Tuesday. The five-year deal agreed upon is worth $60 million.
Millwood, 31, spent last season with the Cleveland Indians posting a 9-11 record along with an American League leading 2.86 ERA. The North Carolina native also struck out 146 batters in 192 innings pitched during the 2005 campaign.
In nine major league seasons, Millwood is 107-75 with a 3.76 ERA. He was an all-star in 1999 and pitched two seasons for Philadelphia before going to Cleveland last year.
Breaking Down The Deal
Texas has been known for their lack of pitching over the years. Kevin Millwood satisfies the Rangers large need for a top rotation pitcher. Millwood?s pitching arsenal features a hard fastball, nasty slider and a solid changeup. He also brings a veteran presence to the pitching staff.
This signing has both positive and negative aspects. An encouraging reality is that the Rangers add a much needed starter to run out there every five days. The additions of Millwood and Adam Eaton should help bolster a troubled pitching staff.
On the negative side, Texas GM Jon Daniels was forced to overpay (5 years, $60 million) for Millwood?s services due to the veteran drawing interest from the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. Millwood leaves a pitching park in Cleveland for a hitting park in Texas which will hurt his production.
The addition of Kevin Millwood definitely improves the pitching staff, but beware of the ballpark effect. Fans should expect Millwood?s ERA to take a big jump in 2006. With more offensive support, however, it is likely that the former Indian will win more games. I predict Millwood will compile 12-16 wins along with an ERA in the high 3s to low 4s.
