Johan Santana and the Mets agreed to a contract extension Friday evening, days after the Twins and Mets struck a deal to send the ace lefthander to New York for four prospects. Santana will take a physical this weekend and if he passes, the trade and extension will become final. The two sides extended their negotiations for two hours past the original deadline at 5 PM EST on Friday in order to get the deal done. The actual dollar amounts and years of the contract are unknown but executives said they expected Santana to receive a contract extending to 2014 at approximately $139 million. Reports are that the contract will make Santana the highest-paid pitcher in baseball history.
