The Kansas City Royals will unveil a new alternate home jersey at a special, private function for Royals' season ticket holders tomorrow night. The Royals encourage media to attend the event, which will begin at 6:30 P.M. at The Grand Ballroom located at 16th and Wyandotte in downtown Kansas City. The new jersey was designed to both recognize the Club's history and winning tradition by reviving the powder blue color while also updating the style to represent the "new" Royals as an organization committed to building a model franchise in Kansas City. In addition, the uniform is designated for wear as a home alternate, bringing the Royals' powder blue to Kauffman Stadium for the first time in team history. "Baseball is a game rich in history and tradition," Royals' Senior Vice President of Business Operations Kevin Uhlich said. "Our goal in the creation of this alternate jersey was to not only honor those Royals teams from the past who proudly wore the powder blues but to bring it of age and allow Royals fans to enjoy it at home in Kauffman Stadium. We're thrilled the new uniforms will be a part of our collection." Tomorrow night's exclusive season ticket holders? event will feature several current players as well as members of the Royals Alumni. Scheduled to model the new alternate uniform are Royals' catcher John Buck, outfielder David DeJesus, third baseman Alex Gordon, pitcher Gil Meche and outfielder Mark Teahen. The alumni group will consist of Royals' Hall of Fame Members John Mayberry, Fred Patek and Frank White. Royals' General Manager Dayton Moore and Manager Trey Hillman are also scheduled to take part in a question and answer session with season ticket holders prior to the unveiling. Light blue road uniforms first entered the world of Major League Baseball when the Chicago Cubs wore a version for a single season in 1942. Powder Blue first appeared for the Royals as their road uniform in 1973. The color quickly became a trademark for the great Royals' teams of the 1970s and 1980s. The first version of the Royals' powder blue, a V-neck pullover used from 1973-1982, was worn by the club during five playoff appearances and Kansas City?s first World Series berth in 1980. The second version, a traditional button-up style, debuted in 1983 and featured player numbers on the front with script "Royals" on the chest replacing the block "Kansas City" lettering of the original. The Royals wore this second powder blue in Toronto when clinching their second American League Championship and in St. Louis during their magical run to the 1985 World Series title. The Royals and Expos were the last major league clubs to wear powder blue when the color was retired following the 1991 season. Media attending the event will not only be able to catch a first glimpse at the new powder blue uniforms but will also have interview opportunities with the players, alumni and front office personnel attending the event.
