Mike Sweeney and his family are safe, but they had to flee the wildfires that are ravaging southern California.
Sweeney, the Royals' longtime team captain, was told to evacuate his home in Rancho Santa Fe, near San Diego, on Monday morning.
He drove to the Los Angeles area with his wife Shara and their children, Michael and McKara. They are staying with his parents in Ontario, Calif.
"We only had time to grab what we could. We got our marriage certificate, the birth certificates, three wedding pictures and two pictures of the kids with Pope Benedict last year in Rome," Sweeney said Wednesday night. "That's all we have."
