Arizona's Justin Upton put on quite a show in his first home game in the majors, tripling to the wall in center in his first at-bat, hitting a 375-foot laser of a home run to the bleachers in left his next time up and doubling to the 407-foot sign in straightaway center the third time he came to the plate. The rookie had a shot at hitting for the cycle, needing just a single when he came to the plate to a standing ovation with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. He hit a hard ground ball up the middle that looked as if it would get through, but Freddy Sanchez, the Pirates' two-time All-Star second baseman, made a nice play to throw Upton out and end the game. "It's awesome just getting an opportunity to be here," Upton said in a soft voice after the game. "I just went out there and got my work in early with the day off yesterday. I felt pretty decent and saw some pitches to hit."
