Managing general partner Peter Magowan was not in Chicago when Barry Bonds hit his 752nd and 753rd home runs, and he was not in San Diego on Saturday night when Bonds hit No. 755 to tie the all-time record. In a phone interview Tuesday, Magowan raised his voice in anger when a reporter suggested his absences have been conspicuous. "I can't go wandering around the whole country waiting for Barry to hit a home run," Magowan said. "I've got other things to do. I'd like to be there. People are trying to make up some fight going on between Barry and me. That's the furthest thing possible from the truth. It's a bunch of bull." Some writers have suggested a rift stemming from Bonds' refusal to participate in the All-Star Game Home Run Derby in San Francisco on July 9. But Magowan said prior commitments have kept him from following Bonds on the road. Ownership was represented in San Diego by executive vice president Larry Baer and principal shareholder Sue Burns.
