Sources later revealed that the deal would have brought former All-Star second baseman Mark Loretta to the Mariners from Houston in exchange for a Class A pitcher and a player to be named later. Loretta, who is batting .294 this season while playing every infield position for the Astros, would have been a right-handed bat off the bench.
Unlike past years when players have been upset when the Mariners stood pat at the deadline, reaction was positive in the clubhouse.
