Jason Schmidt had season-ending shoulder surgery on Wednesday and the Dodgers' right-hander is not expected to return until spring training next year. "We knew he hadn't been throwing well," GM Ned Colletti said. "It's been a concern for a few starts. Obviously it's a disappointment. We'll just have to figure out how to make it better." Schmidt, who signed a $47 million, three-year contract as a free agent during the offseason, went 1-4 with a 6.31 ERA in six starts.
