Free agent pitcher Max Scherzer remains unsigned but has indicated he is prepared to join a roster immediately if particular clubs express interest. The 41-year-old right-hander confirmed his availability and health status Thursday, though he is equally content to wait until after Opening Day for the proper opportunity with one of his preferred organizations.
Scherzer told The Athletic he could follow a strategy similar to Roger Clemens, who signed with the New York Yankees on May 6, 2007, for his final season at age 44. The veteran hurler declined to identify which teams meet his criteria.
At this stage of his career, Scherzer can afford to remain selective while staying home with his wife, Erica, and four children. His most recent appearance came during Toronto's World Series run against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7, where he allowed one run across 4⅓ innings before Los Angeles mounted a championship-clinching rally.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner missed most of the first three months of the 2025 regular season with right thumb inflammation. He posted a 5.19 ERA across 17 starts with the Blue Jays during the regular campaign.
After being excluded from Toronto's Division Series roster, Scherzer rediscovered his Hall of Fame form during the postseason. He compiled a 3.77 ERA in three starts during the League Championship Series and World Series.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider praised the eight-time All-Star's dedication and competitive drive throughout the playoff push. Teams seeking veteran rotation depth may need to act quickly if they match Scherzer's undisclosed requirements.
