The Colorado Rockies have interviewed at least three external candidates to replace Bill Schmidt as general manager, according to industry sources. Toronto Blue Jays executive James Click, Kansas City Royals assistant GM Scott Sharp and Cleveland Guardians assistant GM Matt Forman have all met with the organization.

Schmidt stepped down earlier this month in what the team characterized as a mutual decision. The Rockies stated they would search outside the organization for his successor, marking a departure from owner Dick Monfort's historically insular approach.

Click is the only candidate with prior general manager experience among the known trio. He led the Houston Astros from 2020 through their 2022 World Series championship before departing over a contract dispute. Owner Jim Crane offered Click only a one-year extension following the title, prompting his exit.

Click currently serves as Toronto's vice president of baseball strategy, advising GM Ross Atkins. He inherited the Astros role after the 2019 sign-stealing scandal resulted in Jeff Luhnow's dismissal.

Sharp holds the title of senior vice president of major league operations and assistant general manager with Kansas City. He has been considered for numerous GM vacancies over recent years and was a top candidate for San Francisco's opening in 2024 before withdrawing due to family reasons. Sharp joined the Royals organization in 2006.

Forman ranks as Cleveland's third-highest executive behind president Chris Antonetti and GM Mike Chernoff. The Guardians interviewed him for assistant GM roles before promoting him to executive vice president in January 2022. Washington also considered Forman for their top job this offseason before hiring Paul Toboni.

The timeline for Colorado's decision remains unclear. Sources did not specify when each candidate interviewed with the organization.
