The Boston Red Sox have designated Matt Barnes for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for recent free-agent signing Adam Duvall.

Barnes, 32, is coming off a rough season. In 44 appearances, the reliever had a 4.31 ERA and a 1.62 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The Red Sox extended Barnes in the summer of 2021, signing him to a two-year deal that began last season and guaranteed him close to $19 million.

He's still owed $7.5 million in 2023, as well as a $2.25 million buyout on a team option for the 2024 season.
