Blake Snell tied the American League record with seven consecutive strikeouts to start Sunday's game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners.

The left-hander matched the mark set by Joe Cowley of the Chicago White Sox on May 28, 1986, and also reached by Carlos Rodon for the White Sox on Sept. 30, 2016.

Snell was born in Seattle and pitched for Shorewood High School.

The Major League record for strikeouts to begin a game is eight, set by Jim Deshaies for the Houston Astros in 1986 and matched by Jacob deGrom of the New York Mets in 2014.
