The Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers are carrying nearly $60 million in combined money into the 2018 season.

There are three types of dead money -- money paid to players that have been released, money paid to other teams as compensation for traded players and money paid to players still within the organization but not on the 40-man roster.

Last year, Major League teams carried nearly $300 million in dead money into the season.

The San Diego Padres have the highest percentage of dead money on their payroll (22.1% of $90.7 million) entering the season.
