On Sunday, the Red Sox watched their bullpen cough up a two-run lead in the eighth inning of a oss to the Royals.

On Monday, they did something about it.

The Red Sox beat the trade deadline by acquiring reliever Addison Reed from the Mets for three minor league pitchers, sources confirmed to ESPN. Reed, a 28-year-old right-hander, is expected to serve as the primary eighth-inning reliever and setup man for All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel.

The trade has not been announced because the teams are exchanging medical information.
