An error by Detroit Tigers infielder Jose Iglesias kept the bottom of the seventh inning alive for the Boston Red Sox in Game 6 of the ALCS on Saturday night.

Jonny Gomes doubled to left field off Max Scherzer to begin the inning, at which point the Tigers were leading 2-1. Scherzer than struck out Stephen Drew before walking Xander Bogaerts.

Drew Smyly came on in relief of Scherzer, who had thrown 110 pitches, and Jacoby Ellsbury reached on the fielding error by Iglesias to load the bases.

Jim Leyland then replaced Smyly with Jose Veras as Shane Victorino came to the plate, setting up a dramatic moment. Victorino hit a grand slam to left field on an 0-2 pitch, giving the Red Sox a 5-2 lead that would hold.

The error that Iglesias, considered an elite defender, committed was on a potential double play ball.

"I think we could have," Leyland said when asked if he felt the Tigers could have turned an inning-ending double play. "It was hit pretty hard, but that's part of the game. I have no problem with that. Probably could have turned that, even though Ellsbury runs good. I think we doubled him once in the series. But that's part of the game."
