The Yankees plan to get their payroll commitments below $189 million before the 2014 season, a plan that surprises many of their rivals.

$189 million is the luxury tax line and New York has routinely carried a roster worth more than $200 million over the last decade.

"Very interesting," Red Sox president and CEO Larry Lucchino said of his rival's plan. "We have a policy of not projecting or commenting on our payroll."
