The Red Sox and Blue Jays are beyond the "preliminary" stage of discussion regarding compensation for John Farrell, according to a report.

Boston wants to replace Bobby Valentine with Farrell, who left the organization to become Toronto's manager a few years ago.

In two seasons with the Blue Jays, Farrell has compiled a record of 154-170. Farrell spent five seasons as the Red Sox pitching coach.
