The new First-Year Player Draft system in the collective bargaining agreement was put in place to rein in costs, get players to sign early and avoid signing deadline drama.
For the most part, it has worked but with Friday's signing deadline looming there are still six first-round picks without contracts.
Five of the unsigned are pitchers, including the first three college pitchers taken in the top 10 picks in June.
