The Yankees may not immediately hand Michael Pineda a spot in their starting rotation. Pineda reported to his first spring with New York admittedly 10 pounds heavier than he was in 2011. Brian Cashman opened camp by saying it was unfair for people to view Pineda as a No. 2 starter because his third pitch, that changeup, was below average. His potential has been touted, but with added weight and a need for another pitch he may not begin the 2012 season as a starter.
