Johan Santana threw three innings in a minor league rehab start on Friday.
Santana, who has missed the entire season to this point after surgery on his left shoulder, also threw a 30-pitch bullpen session earlier in the week.
He allowed two hits and one unearned run. He walked one batter and struck out one, and 27 of his 39 pitches were strikes.
"To be honest, (Saturday) will determine (the next step)," Mets manager Terry Collins said.
"I'm not looking for results, I'm not looking for velocity. He is who he is -- he's not going to walk a lot of guys, I know that -- so his command will be there. I'm looking to see how he comes out of this."
