Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts has given a new four-year contract to the team's vice president of player personnel, Oneri Fleita, according to sources.
The decision is unconventional because the team is currently operating without a general manager.
Ricketts may have been forced to give Fleita a new deal because sources indicate that the Tigers were interested in him in a similar capacity.
Fleita will report to whomever the Cubs name as their next general manager.
