The Yankees are considering a six-man rotation.
Bartolo Colon is expected to come off the disabled list and start against the Mets on Saturday and Phil Hughes isn't far behind.
Colon will take Brian Gordon's spot in the rotation, but when Hughes returns New York could feature a six-man group.
"It's something we're going to think about," manager Joe Girardi said.
CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett both like to pitch on regular rest, which may make the strategy unlikely.
Ivan Nova is an option to be sent to the Triple-A level, which would leave the Yankees with a rotation of Sabathia, Burnett, Colon, Hughes and Freddy Garcia.
