Josh Beckett won't start for the Red Sox on Tuesday because of an illness. Boston will instead trot Alfredo Aceves out to face San Diego. "I fall back on intestinal turmoil," manager Terry Francona said. "To be honest with you, he hasn't felt good the last couple of days. He was going to go home and see if he felt better. The more we were thinking about it, before he got out of here, we said, 'You know what? This is silly. If you're that sick, you're kind of worried about pitching tomorrow.' I'm not sure how good he'd feel anyway. So we stayed away from Aceves [on Monday]." Aceves' last four appearances have been out of the bullpen, but he remains stretched out enough to start. "He's done a real good job whether he's been in relief or starting," said Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek. "Day in and day out, he's done a real good job. He's got the stuff. He's just got to execute his pitches."
