The Red Sox exercised the $12.5 million option on the contract of David Ortiz for this season rather than sign him to a long-term extension. Could that mean Ortiz's days in Boston are numbered? "The Sox, like the Yankees, are itching to abandon a full-time DH and initiate a rotation at that position, the better to keep older veterans fresh," Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports wrote this spring. New York has used the DH spot to rest Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira often over the season's first six weeks. Meanwhile, Ortiz keeps Boston's spot filled a majority of the time. He has played in 47 of Boston's 49 games this season.
