Yankees designed hitter and former catcher Jorge Posada addressed the media following the team's 6-0 loss to the Red Sox on Saturday night.
Posada asked out of the lineup close to an hour prior to the game in a conversation with manager Joe Girardi. Posada told Girardi that he needed a day to clear his head, but he has since revealed that he is dealing with a stiff back.
During a lengthy meeting with the media, Posada downplayed the back issues, while mentioning that he needed a mental health day numerous times.
"I told him I couldn't play today and that I needed time to clear my head and that was it. My back stiffened up a little bit," he said of his conversation with Girardi.
Posada is hitting just .165, but has six home runs and 15 RBI this season.
"I hope," he said when asked if he could be in the lineup on Sunday. "It's nothing serious and, you know, it's just really a matter of keeping an eye on it."
Posada was asked if he had a conversation with general manager Brian Cashman, something he said occurred.
"We talked one-on-one, it was a conversation we needed to have," he revealed.
Posada didn't tell Girardi and Cashman about his back issues, saying that they didn't ask.
"I don't know," he said when asked if he has issues with the team's management. "I hope we can move on and go out and play the season."
He tersely denied that retirement is on his mind.
"What? No," Posada responded when the topic was brought up.
Near the end of his time with the media, Posada appeared to hint that he's unhappy with the way the Yankees have treated him as of late.
"I don't understand that. That's the way he works now," he said when asked about the statement made by Cashman during FOX's national broadcast of the game.
When asked if he felt disrespected by the organization, he responded with: "a little bit, a little bit."
The team moved Posada to the designated hitter spot after more than 15 years spent as a catcher prior to the 2011 season.
