Phil Hughes hasn't complained of any physical ailments, leading the Yankees to be baffled by his lack of velocity. His pitch speed was below normal again on Friday, as the Red Sox pounded him for six runs in two innings. New York is hoping that building arm strength will help him regain the zapped velocity. "I know his velocity has not been there this year," manager Joe Girardi said. "Does it have to do with the increased work last year? Does it have to do with it's just taking him a little time to get going? I can't tell you. There's nothing to lead us to believe that something is bothering him, because he hasn't said anything." The Yankees don't believe the right-hander's issue is mechanical, but the velocity issue is contributing to the lack of command he has shown through his first six innings of work, in part because he may be ramping up to throw harder. "We're trying to figure out how to get it back to where to should be," pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. "I think it's just going to be a natural process. All you can do is wait, give him his reps and hopefully it comes back as quickly as possible."
