With manager Tony La Russa blaming the WBC for the injury, Cardinals lefthanded reliever Ricardo Rincon said Tuesday he will have surgery on his pitching elbow and shoulder this week, operations that will cause him to miss the remainder of the season.
La Russa blamed the World Baseball Classic, an international tournament held in March, for Rincon's injury. Rincon played for Mexico, and La Russa thinks the early stress on Rincon's arm was responsible.
"Absolutely," La Russa said. "... I think that's a consequence of pitching competitively before you're ready. ... I have no agenda. I just look at it. When you can't do the work in between your appearances, and that's one of the things our guys are religious about, when you can't do it, you start showing weakness, what other conclusion can you draw?"
